Fire Prevention

Fire Prevention Week was established in remembrance of the Great Chicago Fire that occurred in 1871.  It killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2000 acres.  Because the fire did most of its damage on October 9th, to this day, Fire Prevention Week always occurs in the week of October 9th.

In 1922, President Woodrow Wilson issued the first National Fire Prevention Day.  Fire Prevention Week is the longest running public health and safety observance on record.

We enjoy visiting the students at
Stinesville Elementary School each year to discuss the importance of fire safety.

During this time, children are reminded to always have 2 ways out, how to call 9-1-1 and how to stop-drop-roll.

They also have the opportunity to meet a firefighter and to see him with and without his gear.  We feel this is important as we do not want the children to be afraid of the firefighter when he comes to help.
